Democratization through cooperation

Youth project in Volgograd

Commitment to social activism, representation of the interests of disadvantaged social groups and independent media are essential prerequisites for the development of civic structures and democracy in Western and Eastern Europe.

Through projects in its offices in Berlin and St. Petersburg and with its partners in Moscow, Volgograd, Nazran, Minsk, Grodno and Kiev, Deutsch-Russischer Austausch e.V. (DRA) supports local pressure groups, human rights organisations and other non-governmental organizations. DRA offers continuing education and exchange programmes and facilitates the search for contacts with Western partners.

Moreover, DRA commits itself to the integration of Russian-speaking immigrants by offering voluntary activities in Berlin and acts as an agency for volunteers between Eastern and Western Europe.

DRA is funded exclusively by donations, membership fees and project-related sources.

“With its work, the German-Russian Exchange gives an international dimension to the consolidation of the Russian citizens´ initiatives. The DRA has contributed a lot to the development of non-governmental democracy between Russia and Europe.”

Arsenij Roginskij
Director of the Human Rights organisation Memorial in Moscow

“The activities of the DRA offer a valuable approach to civil structures in a country, in which until recently, all social initiatives were impossible.“

Dr. Hildegard Hamm-Brücher
Founding President of the Theodor Heuss Foundation
